Beginning Cooking assignments

Beginning Cooking Grading Criteria and Due Dates

In beginning cooking, students are given a great deal of responsibility and freedom while working in the kitchens and must be mature enough to handle it.  I expect cooperation from all students, and know that with it we will have a great adventure together.  Parents with questions or concerns can call me at 688-3234 or e-mail to mary_smiley @ pvusd.net

Please sign the parent letter accompanying this paper to acknowledge that you have read this syllabus.  Students keep this paper at home to help remember due dates and should also write the dates in their binder reminder.

Grades will be posted on line.

10% of your grade is given for bringing in two recipes from home.  Try to bring something that you think other students would like to try and might work for school.  Family favorites or recipes that reflect your heritage are appreciated.

Due date  January 23, 07

10% of the grade is based on a written summary and opinion of a food related health article of the student’s choice.  Topics may include nutrition, food research, new food discoveries, eating disorders, diet related health problems, or anything else related to nutrition or food.  A copy of the health article is also required when turning in the summary and opinion.

Due date:   February  6,07

20% of the grade is based on a Home Cooking Lab.  Students must plan a balanced meal.  They need to help shop for it, prepare it and do the clean up.  Students will receive several handouts with further information at a later time.

Due Date:   March 16,07

30% of the grade is based on a cookbook that consists of all the recipes from class and all the written worksheets as well as the health article and cooking at home assignment.  Also required in the cookbook are a table of contents and title page.  We will go over these in class.  Artwork, graphics, and illustrations, which compliment the book, are suggested.

Due date:   March 16,07

30% of the grade is based on the student’s performance in class.  Students will be working in cooperative groups of no more than five students.  Students are expected to complete all the responsibilities of the job.  Jobs will rotate with every lab.  Students will receive grades for each lab both from the group and the teacher.

Late work policy: I accept late work for one week from the due date.  However the grade will drop one letter grade from its original grade per day it is late.
