Here's my Progress Report #2
Dear Students,
Can you believe that we are already half way through our third quarter together? I am scared that if I blink my eyes, all of you will already be walking across the graduation stage at Cabrillo. Some of our hours together pass by very slowly, but the weeks seem to race at warp speed.
I wanted to tell you about my weekend. I went skiing at Donner Ski Ranch with my family. Raphie got to bring a little friend, and the two of them snowboarded. The past several times that we’ve been to the mountains, I had been teaching myself to downhill ski, but I hit a plateau…metaphorically. I was really adept at the snow plow, but wanted to be able to traverse steeper courses. So, I tried imitating other skiers without much success. This time, I decided to take a lesson, and I asked the instructor to show me how to parallel ski. She broke down the complicated process into several exercises. I had to first practice bending my knees differently, and shifting my weight forward. Then, she made me stop “wedging” my ski. We spent a hour practicing and I barely got the hang of it…and I mean barely!
Whenever I am a “student”, it makes me think of all of you. It can be frustrating to learn something new, but also kind of fun. When I was falling down on the cold hard snow, I had to remind myself that some day, my practice would be worth it. Eventually, I will have a new skill that will be useful. Do you ever feel frustrated when learning?
So, dear students, please write back to me. In your letter, I would like you to write about your long weekends, your experience with The Giver, and how this quarter at Aptos Junior High is going. Of course, you can also write about your friends, family, health, pets, sports, music, movies, or anything that you would like to tell me. In this letter, however, I would like you to use at least five transitions. Refer to our hand-out about the different types of transitions, and see if you can use some that are new to you. If you make a mistake, you won’t fall into the cold hard snow, so be adventurous and take a risk.
Love,
Ms. Smith
Monday--No school!

Evaluating the end of The Giver
Write a paragraph in which you tell what you think happened to Jonas at the end of The Giver. If you aren’t sure, you may share more than one scenario or possibility. When you give your opinion, please use quotes or phrases from the story as evidence. . Also, please share your opinion of this ending. Here’s some phrasing that might help you, but please write your own paragraph, rather than just filling in these blanks.
At the end of The Giver, I think Jonas ________________________________________
_______________________________________________________. I am not exactly sure of this, but here’s where the author’s description makes me think that this is what happened to Jonas. Lowry writes, “__________________________________.” I think she means that Jonas _________________________________________. Of course, you could read this sentence and think___________________________________, but I don’t because _________________________________________. When I finished the book, I felt ________________________________________because ___________________.
In persuasive writing, using a concession shows your readers that you have considered their concerns or arguments. Your rebuttal demonstrates that your argument is still either more logical or believable. Here are some sample concessions and rebuttals. Please highlight the concession in blue and the rebuttal in pink.
Reason #1- Sixteen year olds will be safe drivers
Concession/Rebuttal: While you may believe that sixteen year olds are actually less cautious than older drivers, we all know that nervous beginners are careful when starting to drive.
Reason #2- Raising the driving age will cause extra stress for parents
Concession/Rebuttal: It is true that sixteen year old drivers may cause stress for their parents; however, these same drivers alleviate worry by helping their parents with errands.
Reason #3- The test should judge who is ready to drive
Concession/Rebuttal: Some people think that the only way to ensure safe roads is to raise the age. Yet, the driving test is an accurate way to judge who is ready to drive or not.
Some sample concession/rebuttal phrases:
· While you may believe that…….., we all know that……
· It is true that………;however, ………………
· Some people think………..Yet,…………………..
· While it is certainly logical to think ………….;nevertheless …………………………
· I will admit there is evidence to suggest ………….; still, …………………………….
· While you may be thinking……………., you still have to consider…………..
· Although statistics imply………you need to remember………….
· Yes, I will admit that …………., but ……………………
· Even though some people say, “……….”, from my experience, I have observed ………

HOMEWORK- For each of your 3 reasons, create a concession/rebuttal.
My first reason:
Concession/Rebuttal:
_____________________________________________________________
My second reason
Concession/Rebuttal:
_____________________________________________________________
My third reason:
Concession/Rebuttal:
Picture this: a seventeen year old girl busy at a late night dance, enjoying her friends and the music. Now, glance to the doorway, and there waits her mother, watching the whole spectacle What if this teenager had to rely on her mom for a ride home? Can you believe that the driving age actually might be raised to eighteen? I hope the law stays at sixteen for driving so that young people can have their freedom, and parents can have their own lives. I say let the test judge who is ready to drive rather than some lawmaker’s arbitrary decision about maturity.
My first reason that I think the driving age should stay sixteen is because adolescents need their freedom. For sixteen years, they have had to compromise, postpone, and cancel excursions because of transportation problems. Just when a teenager is about to go to the movies, a parent frequently cancels the trip because of some other priority, like going to the post office or the market. It would be especially unfair to have to be so dependent on parents at a time when young people are just beginning to enjoy freedom. I have heard several teenagers say, “I can’t wait until I can take myself places, and not have to rely on my dad. My social plans are always the lowest priority.”
Secondly, I think sixteen year olds should be able to drive because parents hate the stress of being taxi drivers. Most parents are responsible for keeping the home organized, earning money at work, and assisting older family members. They are exhausted and overwhelmed already. If the driving age were raised, mothers and fathers would resist being chauffers for two more years. I could imagine there being many tense conflicts around the dinner table that would sound like this, “Mom, I hate that you won’t just change your day a little so that you could drop me off at the movies. Haven’t you already been to the market three times this week?” We all know that there is enough tension already between teenagers and their parents; there is no need to create more disharmony at home.
Last, but not least, this proposal seems arbitrary. Who can say that one sixteen year old is not mature enough, while another eighteen year old is supposedly ready to drive? Isn’t that what the driving exam is set up to do? The state of California has a thorough written and behind the wheel test which has been created to decide who is ready to drive and when. If a sixteen year old has practiced driving, and studied the driving regulations enough, then the Department of Motor Vehicles will issue a license. If the young driver isn’t yet capable, she/he won’t pass the test. Implementing a new age requirement would be an arbitrary system for determining who is ready to drive.
I fogot to post this on Tuesday!
This week all students should have completed and turned in Chapter 17 of their workbooks.
