Driving Age Persuasive Essay:  Concessions and Rebuttals

In persuasive writing, using a concession shows your readers that you have considered their concerns or arguments. Your rebuttal demonstrates that your argument is still either more logical or believable.   Here are some sample concessions and rebuttals.  Please highlight the concession in blue and the rebuttal in pink.

Reason #1- Sixteen year olds will be safe drivers

Concession/Rebuttal:    While you may believe that sixteen year olds are actually less cautious than older drivers, we all know that nervous beginners are careful when starting to drive.

Reason #2- Raising the driving age will cause extra stress for parents

Concession/Rebuttal:    It is true that sixteen year old drivers may cause stress for their parents; however, these same drivers alleviate worry by helping their parents with errands.

Reason #3- The test should judge who is ready to drive

Concession/Rebuttal:    Some people think that the only way to ensure safe roads is to raise the age. Yet, the driving test is an accurate way to judge who is ready to drive or not.
