Here's my Progress Report #2

            Dear Students,

Can you believe that we are already half way through our third quarter together?  I am scared that if I blink my eyes, all of you will already be walking across the graduation stage at Cabrillo.  Some of our hours together pass by very slowly, but the weeks seem to race at warp speed.

I wanted to tell you about my weekend.  I went skiing at Donner Ski Ranch with my family.  Raphie got to bring a little friend, and the two of them snowboarded. The past several times that we’ve been to the mountains, I had been teaching myself to downhill ski, but I hit  a plateau…metaphorically.  I was really adept at the snow plow, but wanted to be able to traverse steeper courses.  So, I tried imitating other skiers without much success.  This time, I decided to take a lesson, and I asked the instructor to show me how to parallel ski.  She broke down the complicated process into several exercises.  I had to first practice bending my knees differently, and shifting my weight forward.  Then, she made me stop “wedging” my ski.  We spent a hour practicing and I barely got the hang of it…and I mean barely!

Whenever I am a “student”, it makes me think of all of you.  It can be frustrating to learn something new, but also kind of fun.  When I was falling down on the cold hard snow, I had to remind myself that some day, my practice would be worth it.  Eventually, I will have a new skill that will be useful.  Do you ever feel frustrated when learning?

So, dear students, please write back to me.  In your letter, I would like you to write about your long weekends, your experience with The Giver, and how this quarter at Aptos Junior High is going.  Of course, you can also write about your friends, family, health, pets, sports, music, movies, or anything that you would like to tell me.  In this letter, however, I would like you to use at least five transitions.  Refer to our hand-out about the different types of transitions, and see if you can use some that are new to you.  If you make a mistake, you won’t fall into the cold hard snow, so be adventurous and take a risk.

                                                Love,

                                                Ms. Smith
