Aptas junior hi                                March 8, 20007
101 Hunter Ave
Santa Cruz, CA 95003

Dear friends, family and Community members,

Our 8th grade Language Arts class at Aptos junior High is writing to you to
ask for help.  In the past we have written letters to try to persade local
busynesses to donut gift certificates and prizes for our classroom lottery.
This time we have a different purpose.
The Aptos Junior Hi Library is organizing a book drive for incarcerated youth
in Santa Cruz County.  Our school would like to collect as many used or brand
new books as possible to support these underserved readers.  We believe that
literature can help to improve a person’s mind outlook, and educational
opportunities  Can you help us with this project?
Please send books in good shape to Room 29 at Aptos Junior High.  We would
apreciate books that are neither graphic nor violent.  Both fiction and
non-fiction are well come.  We can accept donations through March 16th.  Thank
you for considering this request.

The Amazing $500 Essay Contest

WIN UP TO $500 IN OUR WRITING CONTESTS

Does Diversity Matter? We think so, but we want to hear directly from young people nationwide about why and how diversity matters. We are sponsoring this national "Kids Speakout" writing contests to get the answer to this question.

Email us your essay or quote or click on the links below to download the entry form of the contest you want to join.

WHAT IS DIVERSITY?
The word diversity means lots of different types of things. Think of how many kinds of fruits, or T-shirts, or books there are. How about all of the many types of housing and transportation that exist? Or the amazing variety of birds, plants, and fish found all over the world?

Look around your town or city and around your school. How many shades of skin color do you see? Then think about the different ways people in your community worship, work, and play. Where do their families come from? What languages do they speak to communicate? How do they study and learn at school? It's not the same for everyone -- that's for sure.

CONTEST BASICS
Students across American can participate in our quote and essay contests and winners get cash prizes. Both contests ask the question: "Why is diversity important in our public schools?" The quote contest is for students under 12; the essay contest for students age 12 through 17.

All entries must be recieved by March 30, 2007; winners will be announced by April 16. For more information about the contest, including how to enter, and the number of people who can win, click on the links below.
