8th Grade Language Arts- Please answer the following letter:
September 2007
Dear Students,
One of the hardest parts of being a teacher is figuring out how to challenge each student. I don’t want the class to be too easy or too hard, but I do want each of you to work harder than you have before, and to achieve more this year than ever. I want to prepare you for high school, and for a life of successful reading and writing.
For me, one of the areas in my life in which I challenge myself the most is running. I started running when I was 14 years old because I wanted to stay in shape for tennis. As I began to run, I started to like running more than tennis. Eventually, I quit my high school tennis team and devoted myself completely to track and cross-country. I think I am a better person because I run. The sport has taught me to work diligently, and expect a lot of myself. Through running, I have developed discipline and confidence.
Running is both painful and exhilarating. Sometimes, I get blisters and sore muscles, and imagine that my lungs are on fire. I often want to give up. Fortunately, I also get a wonderful feeling of accomplishment when I am able to run for over an hour or complete a particularly difficult course. Over the years, I have continued to run for the benefits of exercise and this sense of satisfaction.
I often compare running to being a student. Both involve work, patience, practice, set backs, uphill battles and innumerable rewards. I wouldn’t be the runner I am today if I hadn’t had great coaches, running buddies, excellent shoes, and new courses to attempt. I think the same holds true with school. Students need prepared teachers, helpful classmates, lots of learning resources, and academic goals. My coach used to time us and keep track of our workouts. He knew exactly how to push all of his runners, whether we needed to ice our shins, lift weights, or even take the day off. It was no surprise to our community that we won several league championships. Our coach and families knew that we would be successful because we all trained so consistently. Likewise, I expect your “personal best” out of each and every one of you.
So that we can begin to develop a “coaching vocabulary”, please write me a letter about two topics. First of all, I would like to know about any aspect of your life in which you accept challenges and work hard. You might write about your experience with athletics, musical instruments, art, a special hobby, school subject, or family responsibility. Tell me the significant details about your particular challenge, such as how you selected this challenge, who encourages you, how you set goals, and what you do to maintain your motivation and deal with setbacks. Remember, you can write about any challenge.
The second topic I would like you to address is your history at Aptos Junior with the independent reading program (AR). What were your habits with reading last year? What books did you enjoy? How did you deal with points, teacher expectations, the quizzes, and the library? As your “coach”, what do I need to know about you as a reader? If you didn’t attend Aptos Junior last year, please talk about your experience with reading at your old school.
I expect you to write at least one page and a half. Please do not use pencil! Be thoughtful and honest. While I will insist that you re-do this assignment if you make an inordinate number of spelling or grammar errors, you will not revise or “go public” with this assignment.
Truly yours,
Ms Smith
